This dynamic multidisciplinery exhibition presents social, environmental & personal allegory told using the human figure & image.
Lucy Andersen presents anthropomorphic paper dolls reflecting relationships between nature & the human body. The freestanding dolls, made from paper & Yupo with delicate watercolour & ink illustrations, feature human bodies with animal heads draped in water, jelly fish, coral & other natural elements as clothing. Inspired by the storytelling possibilities of childhood toys, Andersen’s dolls stand in as vessels to explore the ways in which we interact with our world.
Marliese Eilers’ dynamic collages feature characters, faces & figures existing in boisterous spaces filled with words, objects, architecture & animals that offer clever observations on the state of the world or celebrate ideas. Newsprint, magazine cut-outs, napkins & transfers are mixed with layers of gesso, paint & mark making, with a focal point emerging from the experimentation. Eilers’ colourful collages invite exploration & contemplation into their meaning.
Samantha Harrison presents work from her ongoing series Recreations of Myth and Spirit. These dramatic portraits in oil recreate figures of mythological & religious origin as modern people. Models are cast based on a moment of perceived similarity with the mythological & spiritual figures, positing that they are deeply connected to – & inspired by – aspects of the human condition, embodying characteristics that persist throughout time.
SungEun Park shares mixed media sculptures that explore the human body & how we feel inside our inner spaces. Through the isolation of the pandemic, Park became fascinated with the way people build mental barriers as protection from their surroundings. Using traditional Koren handmade paper, Park sculpts delicate fragments of bodies trapped or escaping from their confines of monotone surfaces of paint, paper, textiles & wood, emphasizing the fragile yet persistent barriers we build.
